Ancestral Night

A space salvager and her partner make the discovery of a lifetime that just might change the universe in this wild, big-ideas space opera from multi award-winning author Elizabeth Bear.

Halmey Dz and her partner Connla Kurucz are salvage operators, living just on the inside of the law…usually. Theirs is the perilous and marginal existence — with barely enough chance of striking it fantastically big — just once — to keep them coming back for more. They pilot their tiny ship into the scars left by unsuccessful White Transitions, searching for the relics of lost human and alien vessels. But when they make a shocking discovery about an alien species that has been long thought dead, it may be the thing that could tip the perilous peace mankind has found into full-out war.

Splintegrate

Deborah Teramis Christian returns to science fiction with a rousing stand-alone sequel to fan favorite Mainline. One of the many charms of planet Lyndir is the Between-World, home to the licensed entertainers of the Sa’adani Empire. The most famous is Kes, a professional dominatrix who has become a celebrity attraction at a palatial house of domination called Tryst. One of Kes’s most devoted clients is the crime cartel boss Janus, a major cog in the underworld on Lyndir and elsewhere. When a high-powered imperial authority decides she wants Janus out of the way, the seductive domina Kes is the most logical avenue. She’d never betray a client’s trust, but the imperial threat to her and her Between-World sisters is so great that she has no choice but to assist. Imprisoned, altered against her will, and turned into a brutal weapon by the highly experimental Splintegrate cloning technology, Kes is at war with herself as everything she holds dear falls apart around her. It will take an enormous triumph of will and help from some unlikely avenues for Kes to survive the government’s machinations and pursue the independence she’s craved her entire life.

Of Wars and Memories and Starlight

From a writer fast becoming one of the stars of the genre, Aliette de Bodard, multiple award winner and author of The Tea Master and the Detective, now brings readers fourteen dazzling tales that showcase the richly textured worldbuilding and beloved characters that have brought her so much acclaim.

In de Bodard’s first collection come discover the breadth and endless invention of her universes, ranging from a dark Gothic Paris devastated by a magical war; to the multiple award-winning Xuya, a far-future space opera inspired by Vietnamese culture where scholars administrate planets and sentient spaceships are part of families.

In the Nebula award and Locus award winning Immersion”, a young girl working in a restaurant on a colonized space station crosses paths with an older woman who has cast off her own identity. In the novelette Children of Thorns, Children of Water”, a shapeshifting dragon infiltrating a ruined mansion finds more than he’s bargained for when his partner is snatched by eerie, child-like creatures. And in the award-winning Three Cups of Grief, by Starlight”, three very different people — a scholar, an engineer, and a spaceship — all must deal with the loss of a woman who was the cornerstone of their world.

This collection includes a never-before-seen 20,000-word novella, Of Birthdays, and Fungus, and Kindness”, set in Bodard’s alternative dark Paris.
